Who Owns the Data? Reclaiming Community Knowledge for an Ecosocial Just Transition
Data is more than numbers on a screen or maps in our phones; it includes community stories, observations of our environment, artistic expression, and the knowledge we create together. Who collects data, who controls it, who controls the infrastructure and the tools, but overall, who benefits from it are questions of power, rights, and justice. In this interactive workshop, we will explore what data is, together with some data justice principles that could be applied to community science to better understand the quality of the air we breathe or of the water we drink. Together, we will examine how communities are reclaiming control over their knowledge and challenging extractive approaches to what counts as data. Using an ecosocial Just Transition framework, we will explore examples to start envisioning what community-led data practices could look like and map concrete steps toward a change to building lasting community power.
